The
Awards of Excellence was launched in April 2001 in conjunction
with the epicurean event of the region, the World
Gourmet Summit.
“It
was time to introduce such an award. They have the Michelin
in France, James Beard in America and Hats in Australia. So
why not in Singapore? Why not for the region?” Peter
A. Knipp, organiser of the World Gourmet Summit had asked
in retrospect. “The Asian culture has the most amazing
influences on gastronomy and it was just strange there wasn’t
anything that could give the people who toiled at the backend
any form of recognition. I had to change that.”
For
seven years the Awards of Excellence has garnered momentum
and recognition within the industry and has been likened to
the ‘Oscars’ of the F&B industry. It is a
much coveted award, now with a touch of glamour as Preciosa,
the company who created the Miss Universe Trophy, designed
the new awards trophy.
“It
is our wish that the awards will elevate Singapore’s
culinary culture and image, contributing to the development
of Singapore as the gastronomic hub of the region,”
explained Knipp.
The
Awards of Excellence and Scholarships are made possible with
the support of the Singapore
Tourism Board and associated partners.
